Menstrual Cycle

The female body goes through several hormonal changes over the menstrual cycle. Many of the hormonal fluctuations cause women to experience their environment differently throughout the month. Some of these experiences include sensitivity to allergens. Women sometimes notice that their asthma symptoms worsen around the time they start their period.

Studies prove that approximately one-third of asthmatic women face more severe asthma symptoms and/or peak expiratory flow rate. Female asthma sufferers go through what feels like unstable asthma, due to breathlessness, chest tightness, wheezing, and coughing. Peak expiratory flow rates might vary by more than 20% from a woman's typical ratings.

Research studies show that the new leukotriene modifiers and adjustments in long-term control medications can benefit women with asthma before your period. Contact a respiratory care physician. He/she may be able to adjust a patient’s allergy medication or asthma treatment plan to compensate for menstrual cycle sensitivities and fluctuations over time. To help your allergy specialist or asthma doctor to construct the best treatment plan or adjustments to a current plan, patients should record peak flow ratings, asthma symptoms, and changes in allergen sensitivity over in a diary or journal every day. Working with your pulmonary doctor could allow you to prevent symptoms before they occur.
